LG Gram 2018 Product 15Z980-GR3BK Laptop disassembly
1) reception symptoms
This is a customer's LG Gram laptop found in Seokwoo-dong, Dongtan.
Request to reinstall Windows 10 due to slow Windows behavior
2) Confirmation symptoms and repair details
Windows is slow. CPU temperature is high during the Windows 10 reinstallation process.
2-1. Windows 10 Home 22H2 With the latest version, we reinstalled the window and proceeded to the final update of the window.
2-2. Thermal compound re-application was carried out to lower the CPU temperature.
3) Inspection process
I'm reinstalling Windows 10 and checking the CPU temperature on my laptop during the Windows update process. The maximum temperature is 91 degrees.
It's a Windows update process, and the CPU temperature is hitting 90 degrees.
4) laptop disassembly process
It is an LG product manufactured in 2018, and since most users do not apply for thermal re-application, we opened the cover for thermal re-application.

If you release the screw fixed to the bottom cover of the laptop, the laptop will be disassembled as shown below.

I removed the heat sink covering the CPU socket, wiped off the thermal on top of the CPU, and re-applied the new heat conductor.
The CPU heat sink was removed and the existing thermal was wiped off.
I also wiped off the heat from the heat sink. I re-applied a thermal compound called MX4 on top of the CPU chipset.
5) M.2 Slots
The SSD is equipped with an M.2 SSD (SATA standard). Since the SSD may have symptoms of a faulty connection, when it was disassembled, it was removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. Two M.2 SSD slots have been made, and the right slot states that they work when the i7, i5, and i3 CPUs are installed. I don't think I would have put this slot on it if I had a pantry or Celeron CPU. I didn't check it either. I'll check it later when a similar model comes in. I didn't write down whether it supports NVMe on the board. With two M.2 sockets made, the NVMe type is expected to be supported. These days (2024) SATA M.2 SSDs have almost been discontinued, and most of them are NVMe-style, so we don't have a choice.
As SATA standard M.2 SSDs were plugged in, SATA type M.2 SSDs (with B key M key) are recognized. NVMe with only M key seems to be supported, but I'm not sure if both M.2 sockets will be supported simultaneously when NVMe is plugged in. It's not easy to find information on LG homepage. I think I'll check with the service center to see if it's supported or not. Old products are often not even marked well in the manual, so the service center consultant may not be sure. It's best to plug in the product and check it.
There are two M.2 slots. The existing M.2 SSD is equipped with a SATA standard B&M key M.2 SSD. The right slot (J7) says that only i3, i5, and i7 CPUs are supported.
Reapplying the CPU thermal grease does not dramatically drop the temperature. The default CPU temperature is high. The maximum temperature is 83 degrees. If you overload it, it will hit 90 degrees. When using in a quiet reading room or something like that, you might want to lower the CPU maximum performance so that the turbo boost doesn't explode because a sudden increase in CPU temperature can cause fan noise (high speed rotation).

6) Laptop charging port (USBC can be charged with PD charger)
The product below comes with a basic 19V adapter. And it can also be charged through a USB C port. I don't think it will work with a regular phone charger. It seems that it can be charged with a USB C-type PD charger for laptop charging.
